Career Qualifier: The Ultimate Calculator to Compare Your Career Options
It can be tough to know what career path to move towards when you are working in no matter what industry you are in.
I created the Career Qualifier to help people size up different career paths – from staying in your current role, going after a promotion, jumping ship to another company, going into business for yourself, and whatever other options you see before you.
A surprising fact I learned is that the vast majority of creative freelancers have on average 14 years of experience. One reason for this is because the career progression in agencies or businesses lead to management. A lot of people want to be creators – not managers.
By tuning into all the different things that matter to you for your career – the money, the flexible hours, the skills you use, the opportunity to learn…you can sense check what career path is the right one for you.
How it works
First - you download the calculator, which is built in Excel.
Once you have it opened - identify a couple of different career paths you want to weigh up and list them on the top row.
On the left hand side, you fill in your criteria for what’s important to you for your work. I’ve already pre-populated it with the most common things I hear from people in the creative industry who work with me.
Then you give each one of your criteria an importance score. So how important is this to you on a scale of one to five? The score you give here feeds into the overall score each of your potential career moves gets you.
At a glance you can easily see the pros and cons of each option and get a sense of what the best career path for you might be.
